Maja Smoltczyk was elected Berlin’s Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information on 28th January 2016. She studied law in Bielefeld and Frankfurt am Main after completing voluntary service with Action for Reconciliation – Service for Peace in the Netherlands.  
She started her career working at the European Parliament in Brussels, and later joined the Civil Service in Berlin’s state government, in the areas of public services and European law and policies. Before she became Berlin’s Data Protection Commissioner she was head of the department overseeing the support of all the committees in Berlin’s House of Representatives.
