The ICIC have today announced that Brazil will host the 12th International Conference of Information Commissioners in June 2020.
The Executive Team and Secretariat were impressed with Brazil’s application and look forward to working with their ICIC representative, the Controladoria-Geral da União (CGU), to further develop the agenda.
The CGU are the body responsible for reviewing the decisions of public authorities related to requests for info within the Federal Executive branch. They have previously hosted a number of international events, including the G20 Anti-Corruption Working Group and the Red de Transparencia y Accesso a la Información Pública (RTA), a network of Latin American organisations focussed on access to information.
Elizabeth Denham Chair of the International Conference of Information Commissioners and UK Information Commissioner said,
“The time has never been so ripe to debate government transparency and the role that information commissioners and civil society organisations can play in challenging public authorities’ accountability and promoting social, economic and democratic governance. The ICIC, now a permanent framework, provides the ideal platform for agencies and stakeholders at large to engage in and contribute to that debate.
The Executive Committee of the ICIC stands ready to assist in developing a strong and vibrant programme for the conference.”
Brazil’s Ombudsman-General, Mr Valmir Gomes Dias from the CGU has stated,
“On the eve of the 9th anniversary of our Access to Information Act, it will be a pleasure for Brazil to host the International Conference of Information Commissioners in June 2020. Aware of the great responsibility it entails, we are looking forward to welcoming all ICIC members and extended audience to Brasília, a city built to inspire our democratic institutions to deepen their roots into our soil while flourishing towards a more effective, ethic and transparent State.
This event is already being carefully organized by the Office of the Comptroller General of Brazil and the ICIC Secretariat in partnership with the academy, so we can be certain that you all make the best of the time here with us.
See you in ICIC 2020!”
